A New Parent's Guide to Price Tracking Baby Essentials in Canada
Setting up for a baby in Canada is expensive. Here is how to use price tracking to buy everything you need without overpaying.
The real cost of setting up for a baby in Canada
If you are expecting a baby in Canada, you have probably started looking at prices. It adds up fast.
A car seat runs $150 to $600. A stroller is $100 to $900. A crib is $200 to $800. A baby monitor is $50 to $430. A high chair is $50 to $400. Then there are the carriers, gates, bottles, and everything else.
Even at the lower end of those ranges, you are looking at well over $1,000 in essential gear. At the higher end, it is closer to $3,000.
The good news is that prices on all of these products fluctuate. The same car seat can cost $100 less at a different retailer or at a different time of year. Tracking those prices is the simplest way to save money on purchases you are going to make anyway.
Start tracking early
The most useful thing you can do is start watching prices in your second trimester. You do not need to buy anything yet. Just start tracking.
The reason is simple: the more price history you have on a product, the better you can judge whether today's price is good or not. If you have been watching a stroller for three months and it suddenly drops $80, you know that is meaningful. If you look at the price for the first time during a sale, you have no baseline.
Lowvyn tracks prices on over 500 baby products across Amazon.ca, Walmart.ca, and Best Buy Canada. Every product shows its price history chart, its Lowvyn Score, and its Deal or No Deal verdict. You can start building your watchlist with the free browser extension or by browsing the deals page.
What to buy when
Not all baby products follow the same pricing patterns. Here is a general guide to timing.
Buy early (second trimester):
- Crib and mattress. Crib prices are relatively stable and do not fluctuate as much as other categories. If you see one near its all time low, buy it. Waiting rarely saves more than $20 to $30.
- Diaper bag. Prices are low year round on most models.
Wait for a sale event (Prime Day, Black Friday, Boxing Day):
- Car seat. Convertible car seats from Graco and Evenflo see the most reliable discounts during sale events. These are worth waiting for.
- Stroller. Higher price point means even a small percentage discount translates to real savings. Prime Day and new model releases are the best times.
- Baby monitor. Strong discounts during Prime Day and Black Friday, especially at Best Buy Canada.
Buy whenever the price is right:
- High chair. Prices vary significantly between retailers at any given time. Check all three retailers and buy when the Lowvyn Score is above 70.
- Baby carrier. Prices dip frequently throughout the year with no strong seasonal pattern.
- Bath and grooming essentials. Low price point items where the difference between sale and regular price is small.
Compare across retailers every time
This is the single most impactful habit you can build. The cheapest retailer for a given product changes frequently.
A Graco stroller might be $279 on Amazon.ca, $299 on Walmart.ca, and $269 at Best Buy on the same day. Next week, the order might be completely different.
Lowvyn shows you prices from all three Canadian retailers in one place so you do not have to check each site individually. Every product card shows the current price, the retailer, and the Lowvyn Score.
How to build your baby shopping list on Lowvyn
Here is a practical approach.
-
Browse by category. Go to the deals page and explore the 10 baby categories. Get a sense of what is available and what products interest you.
-
Install the extension. The Lowvyn browser extension works on Chrome and Firefox. When you visit a product page on Amazon.ca, Walmart.ca, or BestBuy.ca, it shows you the price history and Lowvyn Score right on the page.
-
Track the products you want. Add products to your tracked list. Lowvyn will watch the price for you and notify you when it drops.
-
Set target prices. For each product, set the price you are willing to pay. Lowvyn will alert you when the price hits your target.
-
Check the Lowvyn Score before buying. A score above 70 means the price is good. Below 40 means you should wait unless you need the product urgently.
Do not panic buy
This is worth its own section. Baby gear is available year round. Unless you need something in the next few days, there is almost always a better price coming.
Retailers know that expecting parents feel urgency. Sale language like "limited time" and "only a few left" is designed to make you act fast. In almost every case, the product will be back at the same price or lower within a few weeks.
The exception is genuinely discontinued products where a new model is replacing them. In that case, the clearance price is usually the best price you will see. The Lowvyn Score will reflect this with a high number.
