Lowvyn Research
Canadian Baby Price Index
Median prices, volatility, and real-deal share for baby products across Amazon Canada, Best Buy Canada, Canadian Tire and Walmart Canada. Computed weekly from Lowvyn's daily price tracking corpus.
Updated · Sample: 11,630 products · 13 categories
Methodology
Aggregations are computed from active items in Lowvyn's catalogue with current price > $0. Median is preferred over mean to avoid distortion from outliers. Volatility is the average coefficient of variation across each item's last 90 days of price history; categories with fewer than 5 qualifying items are omitted. Deal verdicts come from Lowvyn's price-history scoring (see /scoring).

Real deals right now: 2,295 of 11,630 (20%)
Lowvyn flags a product as a "real deal" when its current price is at least 5% below its own historical average across the last 90 days of tracking. Unlike retailer "sale" badges, this comparison uses the product's actual price history, not a vendor-supplied list price.

Most volatile categories
Coefficient of variation (CV) measures how much prices swing relative to their average. Higher CV means more frequent and larger price drops, so deal-hunting pays off more. Categories with fewer than 5 qualifying products are omitted to keep the leaderboard honest.
| Category | CV | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| Baby Monitors | 5.7% | 520 |
| Diaper Bags | 5.7% | 1,279 |
| Baby Carriers | 5.6% | 629 |
| Car Seats | 5.6% | 1,025 |
| Sound Machines & Soothers | 5.1% | 37 |

Common questions
Where does the Canadian Baby Price Index get its data?+
Lowvyn tracks daily prices on 11,630 baby products across 4 Canadian retailers (Amazon Canada, Best Buy Canada, Canadian Tire and Walmart Canada). The index is computed from active products with current price > $0; medians are used instead of means to avoid distortion from outliers. Data was last refreshed on June 26, 2026.
What share of baby products on Lowvyn are currently real deals?+
2,295 of 11,630 tracked products (20%) are flagged as real deals as of June 26, 2026, meaning the current price is at least 5% below the product's own historical average. This is computed from each product's full price history, not from retailer "sale" badges.
Which baby products categories have the most price volatility?+
The top three most volatile categories are: Baby Monitors (5.7% coefficient of variation, n=520); Diaper Bags (5.7% coefficient of variation, n=1279); Baby Carriers (5.6% coefficient of variation, n=629). Higher volatility means more frequent and larger price swings, so deal-hunting pays off more in those categories.
How is this index different from a retailer's own pricing report?+
Lowvyn cross-references prices across 4 Canadian retailers (Amazon Canada, Best Buy Canada, Canadian Tire and Walmart Canada) using the same underlying SKUs, scores every product against its own historical price (not a vendor-supplied 'list price'), and uses median rather than mean to avoid outlier distortion. The methodology is published in full and recomputed weekly.
