Black Friday is one of the best times to buy baby gear in Canada

If you are setting up a nursery or replacing baby gear, Black Friday week in late November is worth planning around. Baby products see genuine discounts across Amazon.ca, Walmart.ca, and Best Buy Canada during this period.

But the key word is "genuine." Not every Black Friday baby deal is what it appears to be. Some discounts are real. Some are recycled prices. Some are barely discounts at all. Here is how to tell the difference.

Which baby categories see real discounts

Based on what we track at Lowvyn, some baby categories see much better Black Friday deals than others.

Car seats. Convertible car seats see the most consistent Black Friday discounts. Graco 4Ever and Evenflo Revolve models are frequently included in Black Friday sales with real price drops. Infant car seats see smaller discounts. If you are buying a convertible car seat, Black Friday is one of the best times to buy.

Strollers. Stroller deals during Black Friday vary by brand. Graco and Evenflo strollers see reliable discounts. UPPAbaby strollers rarely go on sale, and when they do, the Black Friday discount is modest. Baby Jogger falls somewhere in between.

Baby monitors. This is a strong Black Friday category. Video monitors from VTech, eufy, and Infant Optics regularly see $30 to $60 discounts during Black Friday. Best Buy Canada tends to have particularly good monitor deals during this period.

High chairs. Decent discounts but less dramatic than car seats or strollers. The savings are typically $15 to $30 on mid range models.

Cribs. Crib discounts during Black Friday exist but are less common. Crib pricing is relatively stable year round. If you see a crib at a strong Lowvyn Score during Black Friday, it is worth buying, but do not hold off on a crib purchase specifically to wait for Black Friday.

Retailer by retailer breakdown

Each retailer approaches Black Friday differently.

Amazon.ca. Amazon starts Black Friday deals early, sometimes a full week before the actual day. Their baby deals come in waves. Lightning Deals on baby products last a few hours and can sell out. Regular Black Friday deals last longer. Amazon tends to have the widest selection of baby products on sale, but the discounts are not always the deepest.

Walmart.ca. Walmart Canada runs Black Friday sales that typically start on the Friday itself or the day before. Their baby gear discounts tend to be straightforward: a clear rollback price with less of the "limited time" urgency that Amazon uses. Walmart is often most competitive on Graco and Evenflo products.

Best Buy Canada. Best Buy's Black Friday strength is in baby monitors and baby tech. Their selection of video monitors during Black Friday is worth checking even if you normally shop at Amazon or Walmart. They sometimes beat both on monitor pricing.

How to verify a Black Friday baby deal

This is the most important part. A product marked "40% off" on Black Friday means nothing without context.

Check the price history. On Lowvyn, every product page shows how the price has moved over time. If the "original" price was only in effect for a few days before Black Friday, the discount is artificial.

Look at the Lowvyn Score. A score above 70 on Black Friday means you are getting a genuinely good price. A score below 50 means the "deal" is not as good as it looks.

Use Deal or No Deal. Lowvyn's Deal or No Deal feature compares the advertised discount against the actual historical average. It tells you whether the sale is real and what the true discount is relative to the product's normal price.

Compare across retailers. A Black Friday "deal" at one retailer might still be more expensive than the regular price at another retailer. This happens more than you would expect.

What to buy before Black Friday

Not everything is worth waiting for.

Buy now if the Lowvyn Score is above 80. If a baby product already has a high score and you need it, buy it. The Black Friday price might be a few dollars lower, or it might not drop at all. A score of 80 or higher means the current price is excellent.

Buy now if you need it urgently. Baby gear needed in the next few weeks should not wait for a sale. The potential savings are not worth the inconvenience or safety risk of going without.

Wait for Black Friday if the score is below 50. A low score means the price is elevated and likely to come down. Black Friday is a good bet for that price drop.

Planning your Black Friday baby shopping

  1. Start tracking in October. Add the products you want to your Lowvyn watchlist a month before Black Friday. Build a baseline of price history.

  2. Set target prices. For each product, set the price you would be happy paying. If Black Friday hits your target, buy immediately.

  3. Check Lowvyn on Black Friday morning. The Lowvyn Score and Deal or No Deal verdict update as prices change. You can quickly scan your tracked products and see which ones are at a genuinely good price.

  4. Compare across all three retailers. Do not just check the retailer running the sale. Check all three.

  5. Act on strong scores. A Lowvyn Score above 70 on Black Friday is a buy signal. Do not wait for it to go lower. Black Friday prices last a limited time and the best deals can sell out.
