The Best Times of Year to Buy Electronics in Canada

Timing matters when buying electronics

Electronics prices are not static. They follow seasonal patterns driven by new product launches, annual sale events, and inventory cycles. Knowing these patterns can save you a meaningful amount on purchases you were going to make anyway.

Here is what we have observed about pricing patterns for major electronics categories in Canada.

TVs: January and around the Super Bowl

TV prices tend to be lowest in January and early February. This is when retailers clear out last year's models to make room for the new lineup announced at CES.

The Super Bowl period is also a strong buying window for TVs, as retailers run promotions to attract viewers upgrading for the big game.

Black Friday and Boxing Day also bring TV deals, but be cautious. Some manufacturers produce lower specification models specifically for door buster sales. Check the exact model number to make sure you are getting the quality you expect.

Laptops: back to school and tax season

Laptop prices tend to drop in two windows:

April to May is a quieter period when retailers discount mid range models. If you do not need the latest generation, this is a good time to buy.

July to August brings the deepest laptop discounts as retailers compete for back to school shoppers. Student discounts from Apple, Dell, and Lenovo are also available during this period.

Avoid buying laptops in November and December unless you find a specific deal that checks out against the price history. Holiday pricing is often inflated.

Headphones: Prime Day and early November

Headphones from brands like Bose, Sony, and Apple see their best prices during Amazon Prime Day in July and during the first two weeks of November (before Black Friday).

The week of Black Friday itself is not always the best window. Many of the strongest deals appear in the lead up period and sell out before the actual day.

Smartphones: a few months after launch

Smartphone prices drop predictably after each major launch. The best time to buy is typically three to four months after the newest model releases, when retailers discount the previous generation.

For iPhones, this means January to March is often the sweet spot for deals on last year's models. For Samsung Galaxy phones, look at deals in February to March after the spring launch.

The pattern that applies to all categories

Across all electronics, one pattern holds consistently: the best deal is rarely the loudest deal. The deepest discounts often happen quietly, weeks before or after the big sale events.

That is why tracking prices over time gives you an advantage over browsing sale flyers on a single day.

How to use this

These patterns give you a general framework, but real time price tracking beats calendar guessing every time. A product might hit its lowest price outside of the expected window.

Lowvyn tracks prices on Amazon.ca, Walmart.ca, and BestBuy.ca every day. You can see the complete price history for any tracked product and make your decision based on data, not guesswork.
